Episode 1 - Nyasha Chiwuta on Cognitive Dissonance
Being that my guest and I discuss the “what and why according to us" in our chat, I've decided not to faff about with my own interpretation of this theory, and just quote the authority on the subject.
Leon Festinger, the American social psychologist who first encountered it during a study in 1957, puts it like this:
"...we have an inner drive to hold all our attitudes and behavior in harmony and avoid disharmony (or dissonance). This is known as the principle of cognitive consistency.
When there is an inconsistency between attitudes or behaviors (dissonance), something must change to eliminate the dissonance."*
Not being professionals, we just try to get real about what that translates to in today's society of social media overload and in the midst of a pandemic.
We hope you enjoy our musings!
