A Higher Service

Just to be clear

We are all called

To lives

Of service

Albeit

Not necessarily

In the public eye.

Operating in the 'shadows'

Of lending a helping hand

Dishing out food

At heaving trestle tables

Reading soothing passages

To anxious ears

At hospital bedsides.

Playing big brother

To hopeful children

Big sister

To disillusioned women

And friend

To broken men.

In alleys

And hovels

On dusty plains

And barely navigable paths.

Service.

Caring

Sharing

Offering shoulders

To cry on

Providing shelter

To rest easy under.

Considering the

Poor and needy

Disenfranchised and marginalised

On the 364 days

That are not

Days of this-and-that

Or so-and-so.

Where duty and burden

Intertwine

Behind the camera lens

And are visible

Only to God.
