Episode 7 - Sandra Donald on ‘Twenty Years’

I've long been amused by the glaring difference in the way that creative folks title and refer to their work, compared with other professionals. It's like plain and simple is anathema to us.

Science - before you get to the gobbledygook - aims straight for the bull's eye, and invariably hits it. What's not to understand about, 'A Qualitative Approach To The Examination of Bats In Their Natural Habitats'? It's a measured study of flying mammals living in dark places, right?!

Not so we who trade in whimsy.

Short, long, or middling, even I am often left wondering whether going by it’s name, XYZ is going to happen in what every film critic is calling a ground-breaking movie; or will it be so existential, no-one with their feet planted on terra firma could possibly comprehend.

My personal favourites? 'The Unbearable Lightness of Being' and 'To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar'.

Yeah!!

Which is why it was such a relief to see the title of Sandra's song and know instinctively that 'Twenty Years' would signify angst or celebration; both of which always make for a great ditty! And after years of humming to ballads about tears and sorrow, I just loved that it was celebratory.

I'll leave you with this thought.

For anyone who's always imagined that the popular wedding anniversary tradition of exchanging certain gifts for particular years was started just to make things easy for clueless husbands, each milestone is actually quite meaningful.

And whaddya know, the twentieth year is all about porcelain. Described as durable, innocuous, soft and beautiful it speaks perfectly to the nature of a lasting relationship.

To some, that many years is a akin to a lifetime. In which a lot can happen.

This is Sandra's story of just how much.

I think you’ll enjoy our conversation!
